This is an exciting and important year where we build on our learning in a more structured way, while keeping our classroom a fun, engaging and inspiring place to be. In Year 2, we continue developing our phonics skills throughout the Autumn term, helping us become confident and fluent readers. As the term progresses, we also begin focused reading fluency lessons to strengthen our understanding and expression. We enjoy daily Maths Mastery, Maths and English lessons.

Our days are well-organised, with regular spelling and handwriting practice, and foundation subjects taught in the afternoons. Some of these subjects are brought to life through special themed days, filled with exciting, hands-on activities that make learning memorable, such as our DT Day designing, planning, building and making our own vehicles.

Although our routines are more structured, our classroom environment remains rich and stimulating. We have themed areas that change each week, a construction area, a calm space, reading corner, a maths challenge in the tuff tray, and a creative writing area with a variety of templates for independent writing during choosing time.

We also make the most of our fantastic outdoor space every day. This includes a writing and reading shed, role play, tyre track and muddy play, encouraging exploration, creativity and active learning.

We continue to offer a wide range of enriching experiences throughout the year. Highlights include our exciting Great Fire of London Day, as well as special visitors and educational trips, such as our visit to Windsor Castle, all carefully linked to our learning.

In Year 2, the only statutory assessment is the phonics screening check, which children will take in June if they did not pass it in Year 1. All other assessments follow the same approach as the rest of the school.

As the year progresses, children grow in independence and confidence, supported by clear routines and increasing responsibility, such as managing their own trays and resources. Year 2 is a time for developing resilience, curiosity and a love of learning, as children prepare for the next stage of their school journey.

Reading in Year 2

Reading Spine

A reading spine is a curated "core" list of essential, high-quality books. It acts like a literary map, ensuring every pupil builds a shared bank of stories that develop their imagination and vocabulary. By focusing on these specific "must-read" titles, the school helps children move from simple picture books to complex novels with confidence and a genuine love for reading.

Recommended Reading

Our friends at School Reading List have put together a list of recommended reading books for children in Year 2. All widely available to buy or pick up from a local library there's even more to enjoy together at home.

No Outsiders Reading List

We proactively teach about Difference and Diversity in each class and as a wider school as part of our therapeutic ethos. We want to ensure that diversity is represented and explored through safe and supportive activities and discussion. Our No Outsiders programme supports this through stories and planned lessons and assemblies.
