DIVERSITY & EQUALITY

At Long Lane we work hard to ensure that everyone feels like they belong. We are commited to going beyond the superficial to think deeply about difference and diversity in order to get to a deeper understanding of our uniqueness, why and how this should be celebrated.

"Pupils work hard and take responsibility for their own actions. They are tolerant, accepting and celebrate the opportunities that diversity brings.  One pupil summed this up by saying, 'Everybody needs a break and everybody has something to offer. That's why we have no outsiders, all welcome, all different!'" Ofsted 2024

We not only expect respect and understanding of each other's differences, celebrate how this makes us unique but also we explicitly teach children how to be sensitively curious so that they learn more about each other and what matters in an open way without offending. Explicit teaching means that, in addition to teaching through several progressive schemes (highlighted below) we take hold of every opportunity to teach in the moment through assemblies, restorative conversations, stories, theme days, religious and cultural celebrations and experts and our school environment (in other words we have created a diverse environment which celebrates and represents everyone).

You can also see this approach through our therapeutic approach which vows to value all perceptions and perspectives, taking individuals with all their differences.

We encourage upstanders to unacceptable behaviour, intolerance or bullying and we teach our pupils that their voice matters (everyone's does!).

No Outsiders Programme

Our No Outsiders programme is a structured set of age appropriate resources that support diversity and actively tackling stereotypes through story books and assemblies across the school. These lessons are woven into our PSHE curriculum and taught through assemblies and generally throughout the day.

PSHE and Diversity
Breaking barriers and smashing stereotypes

PSHE is woven into many parts of our curriculum as well as being a subject in it's own right.  It simply can't just be taught in stand alone lessons although it is important that we take a pro-active and responsive approach to PSHE in order to catch real life experiences and lessons.

PSHE permeates through everything we do, is highlighted in assemblies and workshops and in our everyday practice, our expectations and how we talk with children.

We use the JIGSAW scheme of work for our lessons which is tailored to updated guidance for RSHE and supports age appropriate resources.

We consult our parents each year on materials that focus on 'Sex and Relationships' and follow the guidance provided to ensure that age appropriate material is used. You can request this part of the curriculum from school and withdraw from this teaching.  Please contact the school for more information about this.

Our Assemblies Supporting Diversity & Values
REPRESENTATION • SENSITIVE CURIOSITY • RESPECT

Our assemblies cover many gritty topics that support positive discussion about diversity, celebrating difference and challenging stereotypes at an age appropriate level and that is appropriate for our context. We know that explicit teaching alongside representation and the expectation of respect for all are the best combination for children to learn this best.

"There is a place for everyone at Long Lane."

"There are No Outsiders here. All different, all welcome!"
