WELCOME TO YEAR 1
Hello from your teachers

Mrs E. Straker
Class Teacher

Miss Roberts
Teaching Assistant
In year one we try to emulate a similar environment to Foundation Stage in the initial term. We have pockets of learning along with continuous provision where children are able to develop their social skills, problem solving skills, navigate play and lead their own play. Adults in the class support children’s development through structured and unstructured play. As the year progresses, the amount of learning time and expectations of work progresses whilst still including time for continuous provision.
Phonics is a key area of focus for us in year 1. Reading is a fundamental part of children’s education. We continue to build children’s phonetic knowledge through the Read Write Inc scheme the children have followed in Rainbow Class. In June most children will complete the Phonics Screening Check.
Reading in Year 1
Reading Spine
A reading spine is a curated "core" list of essential, high-quality books. It acts like a literary map, ensuring every pupil builds a shared bank of stories that develop their imagination and vocabulary. By focusing on these specific "must-read" titles, the school helps children move from simple picture books to complex novels with confidence and a genuine love for reading.

Recommended Reading

Our friends at School Reading List have put together a list of recommended reading books for children in Year 1. All widely available to buy or pick up from a local library there's even more to enjoy together at home.
No Outsiders Reading List

We proactively teach about Difference and Diversity in each class and as a wider school as part of our therapeutic ethos. We want to ensure that diversity is represented and explored through safe and supportive activities and discussion. Our No Outsiders programme supports this through stories and planned lessons and assemblies.
