Now reaching the top of the school, in Year 6, we encourage all the children to take on a leadership position. Eight children represent their houses as House Captains and each week they lead a whole school assembly. Other children take on the roles of Sports Ambassadors and Play Leaders. These roles involve leading sports competitions and taking day to day responsibility of play equipment. We also have School Council members, Reading Ambassadors and Foundation Stage helpers.

Our curriculum is rich and engaging with links between subjects where possible to broaden and deepen understanding. This is further reinforced through curriculum-related trips and visits. Additionally, Year 6 have the opportunity to experience their first school residential at PGL.

Throughout Year 6 we are also preparing the children for their transition to Secondary school. Weekly English and Maths tasks are set as homework in addition to the expectations of reading. We have strong links with our local Secondary schools and liaise with them to ensure that our pupils are ready for their onward education, this includes the social and emotional preparedness, not just academic.

Scroll down to look at our Curriculum. You will find a 'Curriculum Map', which will show you what we are covering throughout the year. Please use the documents to talk about your child's learning at home.

Reading in Year 6

Reading Spine

A reading spine is a curated "core" list of essential, high-quality books. It acts like a literary map, ensuring every pupil builds a shared bank of stories that develop their imagination and vocabulary. By focusing on these specific "must-read" titles, the school helps children move from simple picture books to complex novels with confidence and a genuine love for reading.

Recommended Reading

Our friends at School Reading List have put together a list of recommended reading books for children in Year 6. All widely available to buy or pick up from a local library there's even more to enjoy together at home.

No Outsiders Reading List

We proactively teach about Difference and Diversity in each class and as a wider school as part of our therapeutic ethos. We want to ensure that diversity is represented and explored through safe and supportive activities and discussion. Our No Outsiders programme supports this through stories and planned lessons and assemblies.

You can find out more on our Diversity and Equality page.
