At Long Lane, there is a strong focus on metacognition and cultivating a growth mindset, ensuring that students understand how to enhance their learning skills. This approach is woven into every subject, lesson, and facet of school life, from Mathematics and academic subjects to active play, social interactions and roles of responsibility. Students learn to foster independence in their learning through the eight Secrets of Success, which are reinforced during assemblies and celebrations at both the class and whole school levels.​​
